Calles para la Vida - Ciudad Colaborativa

Chillán, Chile

Re-Purposing Entire Streets

April 2021 - now, intended to be permanent

This is a project in which many different stakeholders are involved. The project was designed by the Ciudad Colaborativa initiative, in cooperation with citizens, local schools, the Universidad del Desarrollo, and local facilities and funded by the local government.

In Chillán, a Chilean city to the south of Santiago, a complete street was transformed to provide an outdoor space that enables safe social interaction during the pandemic. The intervention includes sidewalk extensions, shared street lanes, safe crossings, spaces designated to schools, and waiting and participation points. Half of the street has even been painted with all kinds of drawings, including hopscotch-like games for children. People can also cycle safely, gather and follow classes, or just sit down. The design and organisation of the project was all done with citizens' ideas for greater interaction between neighbours and users of nearby facilities. Even a workshop on urban design and intervention methodologies was organised in order to get citizens involved! The mayor already announced to be very happy with the success of the project. For him it reflects a smooth collaboration between the municipality, citizens, Espacio Lúdico and local facilities, organisations and schools. This project was actually born out of the Ciudad Colaborativa initiative, a project of the NGO Espacio Lúdico. It has the objective to quickly and effectively address the multiple challenges and emergencies that the pandemic has introduced, namely in relation to organising new forms of urban life. Cities in Chile could apply for this project and finally 11 cities were selected, of which Chillán was one!

To create safe spaces for residents and passers-by to walk, gather and organise events on the street.

To create better interaction and co-living between residents and local organisations or facilities.

A better collaboration between different stakeholders in the city;

More safe places to gather and to walk;

More places to organise meetings and workshops; More safe options to cycle
