This publication provides design guidance on how streets can be reshaped to not only promote safe and active travel, but also to serve as public spaces for multiple uses. The "Interim Design Strategies" subsection specifically addresses short-term, low-cost interventions that are a flexible means of reaching consensus and testing permanent infrastructure changes. For each design element, there are three levels of instruction: critical, recommended, and optional features.

This toolkit synthesizes the experiences of multiple stakeholders, as it is based on interviews with parklet actors across the U.S.A. conducted by researchers at UCLA. It first provides an introduction to parklets and their implementation context in Los Angeles, followed by a series of case studies in the U.S.A. with valuable lessons learned. With its "Design Guidance," it provides practical recommendations for readers to find the right location and design a parklet.
